Sculpture: Striding Eagle
What does your sculpture depict in a direct, literal sense?
The sculpture depicts an eagle walking along the ground midstride. The head is held vertically and is looking forward while the wings are tucked behind its back.
What does your sculpture denote?
The sculpture conveys a message of looking/ moving forward confidently. Knowing one’s place and being self-confident, but not to the point of arrogance.
What connotations does your sculpture carry?
Made of marble, the sculpture carries connotations relating to permanence. In terms of the design itself, it conveys ideas of strength, pride, and certainty. Ultimately this combines to form a sculpture depicting all those ideas, but specifically relating to the large, permanent changes, not merely small, insignificant things.
How do you want your distorted version of this sculpture to relate to the ideas outlined above?
I want to maintain the idea of the sculpture representing permanence, but instead wish to invert the ideas of strength, pride, and certainty. Ultimately, I wish to convey a sense of panic, weakness, and uncertainty.
Describe the type of distortion you’ll use and explain its conceptual significance.
I plan to utilize bending, stretching, and twisting in the creation of the project. The bending will be used mainly to adjust the expression of the eagle, allowing for a more surprised expression. Stretching and twisting will be used to warp the lower “striding” portions of the eagle in order to convey the weakness and uncertainty related to where the eagle is moving.
