Research Step 1: Choose and clarify the purpose of your wearable art
I have gotten into to rock climbing a lot through this semester. I have overcome my fear of height for top rope climbing. However, when it comes to to bouldering, I often found myself in a highly anxious point before taking the fall. For some reasons, I trust the belaying system a lot more than I trust the mattresses provided in bouldering. I am also just a jumpy person and I hate receiving the shocks when my body touches the mattress as I fall. Therefore, I want to dedicate this project to imagine some wearable art that can protect me from this shock. In a way, this can be a training and assistive piece as well. As I am still a beginner in this sport, I want to overcome my fear quickly and focus on training myself the most efficiently. What happens to when I am afraid to take the fall is wasting my energy hanging on to the wall. If I just take the fall, I can efficiently continue to train and practice climbing other routes. The other part is to reduce injury, if I fall when I am not prepared, I would be very vulnerable to different kinds of injuries.
Research Step 2: Borrow a strategy
I want to borrow the approach of using air inflation in this work of art and the way they use wireframe to hold up the forms. It looks wonky, soft and sturdy all at the same time.
Research Step 3: Create sketches
