Step 1:
Step 2:
I have chosen to work with a Double Herm which is an ancient statue technique that consists of two different individuals with their backs facing each other and their heads slightly joined. This specific Double Herm that I have chosen has Epicurus and Metrodorus who are both ancient Greek philosophers. The Double Herm is something that was usually done with philosophers and in a physical sense it joins the two. In a symbolic sense, it is meant to be thought-provoking and symbolize similarities or differences between the two philosophers. Metrodorus was taught by Epicurus and was one of his most devoted disciples. The Double Helix has connotations of the mind of Metrodorus being formed by and expanded on from Epicurus’ head. It also has connotations of Epicurus’ mind being linked to his student’s mind, while they both rely on each other for their thoughts. The distortion I want to create is to sever the relationship between the men and distort the face of Epicurus so that it destroys the reliance Metrodorus has on him. The distortion of the teacher would also make one question the modus operandi of being a disciple of someone and if they could corrupt your own thoughts. I intend on using many different distortion techniques and I will look to stretch and bend Epicurus’ face and/or selectively reduce the mesh density of other portions of the sculpture that I think show a reliance and bond between the two men.
