The artist presentation of Juana Estrada Hernandez was a very informative talk where she talks about her life experiences about migrating to the US from Zacatecas, Mexico. She presented past art pieces from middle school and high school to demonstrate her experiences and development in art. There was a clear transition of her past art to her newer pieces in which she originally drew darker and overwhelming pieces such as the devil masked immigrant crossing into the US. She explained that in the past she was upset that there were many missed opportunities such as going to college since she was not a US citizen. However, after a conversation with her niece, her art pieces started becoming more colorful and informative of where she came from in hopes to educate her niece of their Mexican heritage. She is currently working on pieces that are being used in protests to help causes such as immigration legislation. 

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

The presentation was very meaningful and full of stories. I enjoyed listening to the artist and relating to some of her experiences. For example, when she showed the audience the picture of her kitchen in Mexico, I immediately thought of my godmother’s kitchen in Mexico and it looked similar with the yellow painted walls and the dishes piled. The artist did an amazing job sharing her story and experiences with the audience. My favorite two pieces were the prints of her grandfather working on his crops and the birthday party with the piñata in the backyard. I could see myself and my family in these prints since my grandfather would work on his crops in Mexico and have bread and coke for lunch when my grandmother was not able to make him a packed lunch. When I saw the print of the piñata, I immediately heard the spanish piñata song that times how long you can hit the piñata for. It brought back many beautiful memories that as a busy adult one might forget.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was impressed with how diverse and meaningful her work was. I was impressed that one conversation shifted her perspective on the world and shifted her art into a more hopeful light. The piece I enjoyed the most was the piñata print with the mother and daughter on the wall with pencil drawings. It really showed that a story cannot be contained within an enclosed surface but instead stories are fluid and more diverse that cannot be described in a few sentences.

I think her connection to her art was very meaningful and connected with me since my parents are also immigrants who came to the US seeking the American Dream. I really enjoyed how she used quotes from her conversations with her family to describe her art and add value behind each piece. Overall the presentation was amazing.

Viveros-Fauné talked about his book, Social Forms: A Short History of Political Art, and the accompanying show he curated. He talked about how political moments and movements have and have not been represented in art throughout history. He described many other books, artists, and authors. Viveros-Fauné went on to talk about a handful of examples from his book, pictures of the artwork accompanied his in-depth descriptions. Following his talk, there was a brief Q&A. 

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I don’t know if it is just Thursday, my most exhausting day, or if the lecture lacked a certain wow factor that had my attention waning in and out. I found the first 30 minutes to be wordy, lacking in visuals to help engage and work with the information being spoken. I felt that this time focused on the ideas and voices of others rather than Viveros-Fauné’s own. Viveros-Fauné gave a lecture best for those with multiple degrees and years of understanding in art and art history. 

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I found Viveros-Fauné’s knowledge of the work he discussed to be rather impressive. He displayed a great understanding of the artwork, the artist, and the historical context when providing insight.

I found the artist’s lecture to be lacking in intriguing visuals or any visuals in the beginning. Personally, I need a good visual to help keep my attention and to deepen my understanding, even if the occasional quote he said was also written on the screen. I felt as those the audience was being talked at rather than being engaged with and talked to.

Juana Estrada-Hernández gave an hour-long lecture followed by 15 minutes of questions. In the lecture, she spoke about her past, mainly focusing on her family’s immigration to the US and how that journey affects many people coming from south of the border. A presentation was used to display images and her art pieces to provide visual aid.

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I really enjoyed the presentation and hearing from someone who has experience with more modern immigration and the difficulties associated with it. Her art style was very interesting to me, especially seeing how it changed throughout her career. The prints she first made had more somber and darker undertones when depicting the initially crossing the border into the US. It highlighted the uncertainty and fear people have when making such a burdensome decision to move their family to a whole new country. Her more recent prints give a more hopeful and uplifting message showing families and people living in America and making the most of what they have together. She then ended the lecture with her work with non-profit organizations and how she’s contributed her art to helping lift voices.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was most impressed with the exhibition of her artwork she showed. It gave a different way to show pieces and how to ‘expand’ the story held within the art since it can be difficult to portray everything in a single image.

The story she told was so engaging and interesting, especially to see how she implemented it in her artwork. I couldn’t directly connect with much of the story but I could understand the importance of how these events and experiences affect people.

Anthony Cervino gave an hour-long lecture with approximately 15 minutes of questions following the lecture. During the lecture, he discussed his overall background, along with how that background tied into his sculptures. Additionally, he spent some time discussing activities that he participates in that are related to the arts, but not directly related to his creation of sculpture.

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight/response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

Even without being told that Cervino was an art professor, it was apparent that he was some form of teacher based on how he spoke. While he was not the most eloquent speaker, he was very passionate about his work, but also didn’t exclusively focus on it. He showed many examples of his art, but the vast majority of the time it was tied in with events in his background, and he was using works as examples of how an artist can draw from their life experience to find inspiration, something that I, a person who doesn’t consider themselves particularly creative found very valuable.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was most impressed with how focused he was on sculptures that were based on his life events, even the things that most would consider fairly inconsequential like radios and old plastic figurines.

I was really impressed by his passion and he did a very good job keeping me entertained. I also felt that some of his advice about where to get inspiration was very interesting.

Anthony Cervino gave an hour-long talk about his exhibition that is currently in the Holmes Hall exhibition space. Cervino talked about his inspirations and fascination with radio and broadcasting. He presented and talked about a handful of his pieces over the years and explained some of the background behind the pieces. He also talked about his time in residency in Switzerland. Cervino concluded the talk with a quick q&a session. 

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

During the talk, it was evident that Cervino draws a lot on his childhood in his artwork as well as the stages of life he is in. There were a lot of connections made to his childhood through different books, sculptures, and themes that were carried throughout his presentation. From this talk, I really got that you can take inspiration from anywhere and you can interpret inspiration in a variety of ways. It was really interesting to learn Cervino has had to abandon some of his pieces in Switzerland due to shipping costs, I cannot imagine leaving an artwork that I spent a lot of time and thought on behind. 

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

The sculpture that Cervino did in downtown Baltimore that resembled the plastic toy part pieces was something that really spoke to me. As a Maryland native, I could picture some of the elements that were focused on in the sculpture. When I was a kid I also enjoyed twisting the plastic parts off of the sheet so I found the sculpture to be reminiscent of my childhood as well.

I gave the event a seven because I found the talk to be very thought-provoking and I really enjoyed the pieces that were shown in the presentation but was underwhelmed by some of the pieces shown in the exhibition space.

Anthony Cervino gave an hour and 5 minute long lecture with roughly 15 minutes of questing afterward. During the lecture, Professor Cervino from Dickinson College spoke from text and personal experience about some of his art pieces. The presentation was filled with images of his various pieces and some inspiration. He also showed images of the art studio located near Dickinson College  where he brings the community together through art.

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

Anthony Cervino is a sculptor who uses his work for storytelling. He is very confident in his work and revealed an emotional connection with most of his pieces. For example, the Archimorph (the two house piece) reveals the codependency with his spouse since they have been married for over 25 years. Throughout the presentation, Cervino invited the audience into his perspective by sharing stories of impactful/inspiring things he has obtained in his life. For instance, I thought it was very interesting that he collected multiple VCRs tapes of Doctor Who just for the commercials that were only seen live. At the end of the Q&A session, Cervino describes that he does not change or redo the figurines in his pieces, but instead he shifts its meaning to fit in the new era.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was impressed with how diverse his work was. Most of his work he presentented had an Americana vibe, yet the different forms (structural vs figurines pieces) of work impressed me the most.

I think he was very clear and informative with his presentation and shared personal anecdotes with the audience. He did switch from reading text off the computer and talking freely to the audience which was interesting to see.
