Nicholas Cuevas – Project 4: Step 2
The sculpture I chose depicts the Graeco-Egyptian god Hermanubis standing upright and holding a caduceus. I think the very obvious thing this sculpture is trying to depict is death since Hermanubis is the god of death. But there is also the caduceus he is holding which represents peace, commerce, and medicine (in a modern sense). Compared to Egyptian mythology and modern depictions of Anubis, this one feels a lot more tame. Normally Anubis is depicted as very intimidating; something you’d want to avoid, like death itself. But this Graeco-Egyptian depiction seems more inviting and less fear-inducing. And it fits in perfectly with Hermanubis’ role in Greek mythology which is to help guide souls to the underworld. I want to distort the figure in a way that represents both sides of death. There is the sad and ugly nature of what death is and then there is the side that deals with closure and accepting loss. To best represent this, I want one half of the sculpture to look a little grotesque. I want to distort limbs to have them bend in unnatural ways and possibly replace other features with signs of decay (example: exposed bones).

Nicholas Cuevas – Project 3 Parts 1, 2, & 3
Part 1: This event was during my childhood. I can’t remember exactly what day or year it was but I know it was when I was in elementary school. It was during winter break and my family had planned a big family trip to Big Bear Lake in California. All my aunts, uncles and cousins were all going so I was really excited. The adults of the family had rented out a big cabin for all of us to stay at for a week. The week that I was there was some of the most fun I had ever had. It was the first time I had ever seen snow, which was amazing to me as a child. Every morning we were there, me and my cousins would get ready after breakfast and mess around outside for hours. We made snow angels, built snowmen, snowball fights, sledding, etc. We also did some hiking as well which was fun but not as fun as playing outside. After we did our activities during the day, we would go back to the cabin and do all sorts of other things. Me and my cousin brought our nerf guns and we’d run around shooting each other. One of my cousins brought their Wii so we would play video games until we fell asleep. Our last night there was our favorite night. That night we had dino nuggets and macaroni and cheese for dinner (the best meal for a child) and baked cinnamon rolls for dessert. Me and my cousins felt it was the greatest time of our lives.

Major: Film / Media Studies
I am on the executive board for Japan society. I like to attend campus theater screenings when I can. In my free time, I like to hang out with my friends (hiking, going to random stores around the area, go out to dinner, etc.) and play video games.
I am taking this class as a major requirement and as a way to figure out what exactly I want to do with film. Prop making / sculpting has always been something on my mind and I have been wanting to try it out.
