Title of Event: Open Figure Drawing
Date and Time of Event: April 20th 2023 at 7:30pm
Location of Event: Holmes Drawing Studio
1. Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended:
This was an open figure drawing session in which artists could practice sketching nude models in various positions. The time frame for sketching would vary, starting from 2 minutes at the beginning, and increasing in time frames until the final sketch which was 20 minutes long. The models would be in different positions for each time frame and the artists would use their time to warm up and perfect different skills before the final sketch which would ideally be their best.
2. Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?
I enjoyed the opportunity to attend this session. I was very inspired by the skill of the artists around me who were all very proficient in sketching and were able to accomplish what their intended vision for the sketch was very quickly and in detail. The different positions of the models allowed the artists to work on different parts of the body and emphasize different positions and lighting changes that came with it. I was very intrigued by the way I found myself starting to view the way the human body was shaped, and it was insightful to see how I would recreate it in my sketches. I do wish that there was more instruction provided for beginners.
3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?
The idea of being on a time limit for something that is so technical impressed me the most. It showed me how you have to have a vision of what you want to produce, and any errors along the way would have to be incorporated into the final product. I was also impressed by this approach because I think it allows the artist to focus less on perfection and more on the feeling they get when sketching the model in front of them.
4. Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
6
5. Justify your rating in the question above:
The idea behind the event is good, but I think as a beginner it was slightly above what I was capable of doing and so I think the purpose of the event was a little bit lost on me.

Title of Event: Krystal Rodriguez and Jefreid Lotti Lecture
Date and Time of Event: April 3rd 2023 at 5:00 pm
Location of Event: Holmes Auditorium
1. Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended:
Rodriguez and Lotti gave a 45 minute lecture followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. The lecture detailed the work they have done, as well as the work they are currently working on while they have been at Bucknell. They detailed their individual experiences growing up surrounding their Cuban heritage and how it has influenced the artwork they make. The discussed how they met each other, and how living together has shaped the work they create. The art they are currently making at Bucknell is called “Convivir” which means “cohabitation” and it is a collection of artwork they have made together. The two artists used a presentation to show their work and they would provide detailed explanations on each of them.
2. Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?
I enjoyed the detail that each of them went into for each of their artworks. I enjoyed Rodriguez’s artwork less because they all seemed too similar to me, and they meaning behind the artwork was too straight-forward and there was almost no interpretation for the viewer to make. Lotti’s artwork on the other hand impressed me a lot. The different pieces he made were visually appealing and they way he structured his artwork was full of color and definition, with very small details that allowed a wide range of interpretation. Lotti’s way of creating artwork from seemingly mundane objects or ideas was interesting, and his work elicits a very visceral response from viewers. Overall Lotti was able to execute his vision of creating art of unknown phenomena very well.
3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?
Lotti’s series of works titled “Bus Sweat and Tears” was very interesting to me. He was able to depict a bus in a very grim and tormented way that spoke well to the way that people would have actually felt while taking that public transport system. His works titled “Efichensi” also managed to convey the chaos of the way some lower income live and it is able to depict the feelings and emotions of an almost unknown world very well. His works titled “Essential Work” were my favorite. The depiction of workshop would seem unimportant but he does it with a creativity and in such detail that there is so much meaning and effort that I could draw from the art that I could feel the work that was done in those areas. The way that these artworks are also displayed in the workshop makes it even more interesting because it is a very unusual place to place artwork, but it seems to fit with the theme of that art perfectly.
4. Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
7
5. Justify your rating in the question above:
I thought that both Lotti and Rodriguez could have improved their presentation skills, and I thought that Rodriguez work was not as interesting as Lotti’s, but the enjoyment I had from viewing Lotti’s work is what mainly contributes to the overall positive score.
Title of Event: Juana Estrada Hernandez Lecture
Date and time of event: Tuesday March 21st 5 pm
Location of Event: Holmes Auditorium
Type of Event: Guest Artist Lecture
1.) Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended.
Ms. Hernandez gave an approximately 1 hour long lecture, beginning with her background as a child immigrant and how her lack of citizenship affected her. She then touched on how the DACA program allowed her to go to college while proceeding to expound on how much of the discussion relating to migrants in the past decade have affected her work as an artist, both in her creation of traditional prints, but also more modern ideas of sculpture that adapted her work with print making.
2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?
Throughout the talk, Ms. Hernandez did a phenomenal job of describing how her experiences led to her focusing her work on depictions of migrants. Additionally, I found much of her descriptions of moving between print making and sculpture and her struggles in using the materials she found important (e.g. thermal blankets) in her printmaking endeavors really interesting. The parallels between it and our adapting the Metaphorms projects in order to 3D print them were intriguing, though her work is admittedly at a much larger scale.
3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?
Her mentions of moving between sculpture and printmaking through an exchange program as a graduate student were fascinating because of their differences, but also how she applied her lithography techniques to the creation of the sculptures which used larger physical objects.
4.) Overall, how would you rate this event (10 being the most worthwhile)?
8
5.) Justify your rating in the question above:
I thought she was an excellent speaker, and she did an extremely effective job of conveying the impacts of her families history on her work, even to an individual who has never experienced much of what she was describing.
